Its officially been 10 years since Stath got hurt and to say I’m proud of everything he’s accomplished in these last 10 years would be the understatement of the decade! When I was a little girl, I never really imagined that I would marry someone in a wheelchair, but I’ve learned it definitely has its perks! (better parking, amirightttt… JUST KIDDING) but really, watching Stath overcome so many things over these last years has been such an inspiration! He lives an extremely full life, despite everything he goes through each day, and he’s helped change the way I view life as well! We don’t take anything for granted and we try our best to experience everything this life has to offer, traveling and spending valuable time with family and friends! I’ve learned A LOT over these last years, but I thought it would be fun for Stath to share 10 things he’s learned in these last 10 years so here we go! Staths blog debut! Hes’s ready for his closeup! Hopefully this will help everyone better understand what people with disabilities go through on a daily basis! Enjoy!
.) The most important thing to remember is you only have one life to live so you have to do your best to make it count, especially if you get a second chance like I did
.) If you experience a traumatic injury, you have to be strong and refuse to let that disability destroy your life. Work hard and always think about where you see yourself going and how you will get there so it can become your reality one day
.) Many times, you can still do the things you really want to do; however, you just might have to be creative in how you do it! For example, I combined and adapted my drum kits so I can still play, which is a passion of mine!
.) Remind yourself often to stay strong because sometimes you have to do things you don’t want to do in order to be as independent as possible; such as cathing… trust me, nobody WANTS to cath themselves, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do!
.) Take advantage of every opportunity you still have! For example, I discovered I was still able to do things like go on roller coasters and skydive. I definitely took these opportunities and I’m so glad I did! If there’s still something you want to do, see if it is still possible!
.) Setting both big and small goals for ourselves not only help us climb the highest peaks, but they can also help get us out of the deepest holes. Small goals such as driving again, working again, and dating again can lead to achieving bigger goals like buying a house, getting married, and traveling.
.) Driving with your hands is hard, but letting Elisa drive all the time was much harder, so I was motivated to get back on the road FAST!
.) ALWAYS make sure they put your wheelchair on the plane (This REALLY happened to us in Iceland, making for a rough first stay but a crazy story!)
.) Falling out of your wheelchair sucks, so always make sure you have a great support system to pick you back up, no matter what!
.) No matter how difficult life may seem at times, always fight and do not give up because if there is life, there is hope!
